PHILOSOPHY OF PRIMARIS

About Rice

In Indonesia’s rich cultural tapestry, rice symbolizes tradition, history, and national identity. Rice cultivation in Indonesia transcends mere agrarian activity, embodying spiritual expression and local wisdom, intertwined with every facet of society since ancient times. History venerates Dewi Sri, the fertility goddess who is believed to safeguard rice cultivation and earthly life. The rice planting culture involves prayers and rituals at every stage, from preparation to harvest, underscoring the close relationship between humans and nature. This is exemplified in Bali’s Subak system, which reflects communal cooperation, environmental preservation, and traditional knowledge about season and winds, and also pest control.
Unfortunately, this indigenous wisdom is fading and being replaced by consumerism. Rice is now often seen merely as a source of carbohydrates that only provide fullness, and its diversity is diminishing. Despite Indonesia being one of the highest consumers of rice in the world, our rice consumption is predominantly on white rice—milled rice that lacks the outer layer, resulting in lower mineral and vitamin content. This shift neglects the nutritional richness of local rice varieties, such as red, black, and unpolished rice. These varieties is unpolished rice with the bran layer still attached to the endosperm. The bran layer are rich in natural oils, essential fats and fiber, offering higher nutritional content and more energy than white rice.

Moreover, rice is now valued solely as an economic indicator of prosperity, leading many farmers to prioritize maximum production over environmental sustainability. The widespread use of pesticides and chemicals to whiten and preserve rice threatens the sustainability of agricultural systems and future health.

Driven by these concerns, we present Primaris. With a deep respect for local wisdom, environmental sustainability, and health, we introduce exceptional products harmonized with nature. Our range of organic black rice, red rice, purple rice, brown rice, and menthik susu, a short grain milky white rice. We also develop a variety of rice-based products such as multi-colored rice flour, rice milk, gluten-free cookies made from organic rice flour, and rice chips.

Primaris, an acronym for Prima Ragam Istimewa (Excellent Prime Varieties) is dedicated to preserving Indonesia’s rich sources of quality food, which are recognized globally, especially in Asia. By embracing our diverse rice heritage, we strive to bring the best of Indonesia’s natural bounty to the world while promoting the preservation of local wisdom and environmental sustainability.

Owl • Rice Grains • Crown Chakra Mandala

The Javanese Owl

As a tribute to the values of local wisdom and the natural beauty of Indonesia, we have chosen the Javanese Owl (Otus angelinae) as our emblem. Owls have long been mythological creatures and symbolic figures in various cultures and civilizations worldwide. In Ancient Greece, for example, the goddess of wisdom, Athena, was nicknamed Glaukopis (bright-eyed), referring to the owl. The owl’s ability to penetrate darkness, convey mystical messages, and embody tranquility reflects profound wisdom and knowledge.

The Javanese Owl is an endemic species inhabiting the mountain forests of Java. Notable for its small size compared to other owl species, the Javanese Owl possesses large, sharp eyes, making it a proficient hunter in low-light conditions. Much like rice with its small grains yet decisive role as a staple food source, the Javanese Owl symbolizes the significance of every individual in the mosaic of life.

The sharp vision of the Javanese Owl inspires us to provide rice that meets high environmental sustainability and health standards. We interpret its nocturnal nature as symbolizing the availability of Primaris products anytime and anywhere to meet consumer needs. The wisdom and knowledge associated with the owl are the foundations for our commitment to producing and maintaining high-quality rice, adhering to organic cultivation, and sustainable agricultural practices.

The choice of the Javanese Owl as Primaris’s primary logo is not just a showcase of Indonesian identity. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our nation’s biological richness. Rice is not just food; it represents cultural and ancestral traditions dating back to ancient times. Aligned with Primaris’ commitment to sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship, the adaptability of the Javanese Owl to its local environment reflects our vision to support and respect the diversity of local rice while positively impacting the surrounding ecosystem.

Rice Grains

Rice cultivation in Java boasts a rich history, with one of the oldest records found in the Canggal Inscription from Central Java, dated to 732 AD and written in Pallava script. This inscription reveals that “Yawadwipa (Java) under King Sanjaya was blessed with the wealth of rice and gold,” signifying rice as a cornerstone of prosperity and power. Historical texts like the Babad Tanah Jawi further highlight how the Kings of Mataram valued rice for maintaining stability and authority. Rice has long been associated with the saying “gemah ripah loh jinawi,” meaning “peaceful, prosperous, and abundant,” illustrating its vital role as a symbol of well-being since ancient times.

The proverb “the fuller the grain, the lower it bows” beautifully captures the humble nature of rice plants, suggesting that true wisdom brings humility. We honor this principle by prioritizing the quality of our rice over sheer production volume, ensuring that each grain embodies excellence.

Our Primaris logo features rice grains arranged in a circle, symbolizing food and the essence of life for Indonesian society. This balanced arrangement represents the importance of maintaining harmony and proportion in all aspects of life, from human relationships to our connection with nature. The circular design also reflects cooperation and unity in achieving common goals. Through Primaris, we aim to fulfill dietary needs while promoting sustainable prosperity and well-being for all.

Crown Chakra Mandala (Sahasrara)

The concept of Mandala is not a new idea in Indonesian culture. Essentially, the Mandala represents a “circle,” symbolizing the cycle of life, repetition, and the individual’s spiritual journey. Our ancestors have woven Mandala elements into various creative achievements, for example Mandala elements carved on Borobudur Temple since centuries ago. The Mandala is not only found in Buddhist tradition but also appears in Hinduism, Jainism, and even Shintoism, indicating its universality in human civilization.

In the Primaris logo, the Mandala element manifests as the Crown Chakra. The term “chakra” originates from Sanskrit, meaning ‘wheel.’ Chakras are energy centers within the human body that regulate and create energy, enabling individuals to function and think optimally. Among these, the Crown Chakra, a central element of the Primaris logo, stands as the highest energy center, located at the top of the head. This chakra is often associated with knowledge, spiritual connection, and transformation. It symbolizes the gateway for divine energy to permeate all body layers, leading to universal consciousness, enlightenment, wisdom, and spiritual connectivity.

This element perfectly aligns with Primaris’ philosophy of incorporating goodness into the body through food. In holistic health, the human body comprises five pillars: the physical body, emotions, energy, mental state, and spiritual well-being. The food we consume forms the foundation for the health of these pillars. Therefore, consuming high-quality food from ethical sources and sustainable cultivation practices nourishes the physical body and promotes emotional, energetic, mental, and spiritual well-being.

The Crown Chakra’s focus on balance and harmony underpins Primaris’ commitment to sustainable agriculture, soil health, and consumer well-being. Primaris strives to meet the dietary needs of the physical body, which houses the other four pillars. We believe that good food leads to a better life.

As the world faces global warming, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and declining health quality, Primaris upholds the philosophy that food can catalyze positive change. As Anthony Bourdain said, “Food may not be the answer to world peace, but it’s a start.” Our daily choices about what we eat profoundly impact the earth’s condition. Our preference for local and organic food has a domino effect, benefiting farmers’ well-being, optimizing nutritional values, promoting sustainable farming practices, supporting the domestic economy, and preserving Indonesia’s biological diversity.

These aspirations drive Primaris: to make rice, the cornerstone of daily food in Indonesia, a starting point for achieving goodness. We aim to reframe rice consumption as a celebration of life, a reminder of local wisdom, support for the tireless hands nurturing rice, and a source of nutritious enjoyment. Rice is integral to our identity, and Primaris proudly presents it to you.
